Established in 1988

The Great Wood was bought in 1988, by Don and Helen Recchia, with the vision of creating idyllic eco-lodges so that others could also enjoy its natural beauty. Due to its proximity to the historic city of York, Castle Howard, the Howardian Hills, the North Yorkshire Moors and East Coast, they believed it would be a fantastic place for people to holiday (and they were right!).

Crafted with Care

The luxurious and stylish timber framed lodges have a galleried roof and wooden oak floors throughout. Special care was taken in the construction of the lodges to ensure they were built using eco-friendly principles whilst not compromising on style or quality. Such principles include; flax and recycled newspaper for insulation, plant oil based paints, water conservation and energy saving lighting. Douglas fir cladding has been used on the outside which has been protected with eco friendly paints so that, the lodges blend into with the woodland environment.

Our Story

In July 2019, Don and Helen retired, and we took over their amazing project. We fell in love with what they had created and were eager to take care of the outstanding lodges and the beautifully wild surroundings. We too are very passionate about the environment, and take special care to keep ecological principles in mind in whatever we do.

We are so excited for the future of the Great Wood, and can’t wait to put our exciting ideas into action in this long-term project of making the Great Wood, even greater. We would love for you to share the journey with us.

We look forward to your stay.

Our Footprint

Here at The Great Wood we believe in a sustainable future. We are in the process of becoming completely carbon neutral, read our blog posts (coming soon) to see how we are attempting to do this on a daily basis.

The preservation of our woodland, and the many species it homes, is one of our top priorities. We plan to increase the diversity of the woodland by planting a variety of different native species, whilst also taking care of the already established trees.
